Ute Lake is one of New Mexico’s premier walleye lakes – a long, narrow, 8,000-acre reservoir on the Canadian River in the northeastern high plains near Logan. Stretching some 13 miles through low canyon country, it’s a fishing-and-boating destination anchored by a state park, and a growing lakeside community in this quiet corner of the state.

Fishing Ute Lake

Ute Lake is renowned for walleye – one of the best walleye fisheries in New Mexico – with strong smallmouth, largemouth and white bass, plus channel catfish and crappie. A New Mexico fishing license is required. The long, winding lake with its rocky points, coves and the river inflow gives anglers miles of structure to work, and it hosts walleye and bass tournaments. The warm climate makes for a long fishing season.

The state park and recreation

Ute Lake State Park wraps the reservoir with campgrounds, a marina, boat ramps and day-use areas, supporting boating, water sports, fishing and camping. The big open water suits powerboating and sailing, while the quiet canyon arms reward anglers and paddlers. A lakeside community has grown up nearby, and the lake is a welcome blue oasis in the high-plains ranch country.

Getting there and what’s nearby

Ute Lake is at Logan off NM-540 in northeast New Mexico, about 25 miles northeast of Tucumcari. The Route 66 town of Tucumcari and Conchas Lake are nearby for a multi-lake trip.
